Things to Pack For Your Trip to China
So you’re planning a trip to China — get ready for the adventure of a lifetime. The Chinese culture is rich and exciting, with some of the oldest relics in recorded history, and food that is both delicious and disgusting (you’ll get used to it, I promise).
It is one of the fastest growing countries in the world. However, there are some things that we think are important, everyday things that aren’t as necessary to Chinese Nationals. As you are reviewing your normal packing list, make sure that you include these nine items in your suitcase!
Shower Shoes
Whether you are staying in a hostel or a 5 star hotel, you’re going to want to bring shower shoes. Pack a pair of flip flops or sandals to wear in the shower to protect your feet from any fungus or bacteria growing on the floor of the shower.

You don’t want to contract athlete’s foot, methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) on your trip.
Sturdy Shoes
Bring a pair of sturdy shoes for your excursions, as you probably won’t be able buy a pair in China (unless you have tiny feet!). You might not want to be tromping around everywhere in your sneakers, so bring a pair of fashionable flats to wear around town, just make sure they are comfortable (you will do a lot of walking).
Tissue Packs
In China, it is rare to find a western toilet, and even rarer to find a bathroom with toilet paper in it. You can buy toilet paper at convenience stores, but it is a good idea to bring lots of pocket tissues for when you’re on the go. It may also be a good idea to bring hand sanitizer as soap and water is also a rare commodity.
Your Favorite Toiletries
You will not be able to find your favorite brands of toiletries in China, and some toiletries you won’t be able to find at all. So if you have a favorite shampoo, bring it. And as for deodorant and conditioner, you probably won’t be able to find those at all, so bring your own.
It is also unlikely that you will be able to find feminine hygiene products, especially tampons, so bring plenty for the duration of your trip (you may want to bring extra just in case someone in your party forgets).
Adapter
While many of our electronics can be used in 110v and 220v (China uses 220v power), your phone won’t fit into the three pronged plugs in China. Go to Walmart and purchase a universal adaptor for about $20.
It may be worth it to spend a few more dollars to get a grounded adaptor, as power surges happen often in China. You can purchase one when you get there, but chances are, it will break or maybe shock you due to its cheap manufacturing.
Quick Dry Clothes
Finding a dryer in China is difficult if not impossible. Bring clothes that dry quickly such as nylon and polyester instead of denim and cotton. The humidity in the air can cause slow drying clothes like jeans clothes to get moldy if you line dry them.
Hotel Business Card (and Common Phrases)
When you are in the country, it is a wise idea to grab a card from your hotel, with it’s name and directions written in Chinese. You can show that to the taxi driver in case you get lost. It is also a wise idea to get a book with common phrases written in both Chinese and English so that you can ask for help if needed.
A Proxy Server
Another thing you won’t necessarily bring, rather buy there is a proxy server. Many websites such as Facebook, Google, Blogspot, Instagram, etc. are blocked on the mainland, and you will need a proxy server in order to access them.

A proxy is a computer or software system that allows one user to connect to a third party website. Common sites include: Securitales, Freegate, HotspotShield, and EarthVPN.
Gifts
Gift giving is common in Chinese culture. While we reserve gifts for holidays and birthdays, they give gifts when they visit their friends, during business meetings, and more.
While you don’t have to bring an extravagant gift (it may be seen as a bribe if it is too fancy), something small and personal from your hometown is a good idea. Give the gift to your new friend or business associate in private with both hands. If you have multiple gifts, always give the gift to the senior most person first.
