Six Items You Can Save Money On By Buying Out of Season
Everyone is looking for little ways to save a few bucks here or there. One way to save a little bit of money is by buying items out-of-season. It takes a little bit of planning, but if you know what to look for, and when to look for it, it can mean big savings, and more wiggle room in your budget. Here are six different things that you can save a lot of money on by buying out-of-season.
1. Holiday decorations
This seems obvious, but it’s something that not many people take advantage of. Everyone wants to buy Christmas decorations when they’re in the holiday spirit, and retailers know this, so they inflate prices in late-November and December. But once Christmas is over, they are looking to get rid of any unsold inventory and often mark their Christmas merchandise down significantly. This works for other holidays as well, such as Halloween decorations or Valentine’s Day cards.
2. Outdoor furniture
Outdoor furniture is another item that is much cheaper out-of-season. Most people like to buy their patio furniture in the spring and summer, when the weather starts to get warmer, so companies will often offer special deals in the late fall and winter months to ensure year-round business, and to help clear out inventory for next summer’s furniture.
3. Clothes
Seasonal-sepcific clothing is another thing that gets cheaper out-of-season. It can be difficult to buy children’s clothing too far in advance, if you’re unsure just how much a child might grow, but for an adult that doesn’t fluctuate too much in size, buying winter clothes in the early spring, or summer clothes as soon as the leaves start to turn in the fall can mean big savings and help your clothing budget stretch farther.
4. Computers
Technology like computers doesn’t seem like something that would be affected by seasons, since they work the same all year round. But prices do sometimes change based on the time of year. Most new computers are either bought in the fall, when it is time for college kids to head back to school, and over the holidays as gifts. Look at which companies are rolling out newer models, and try to find discounts on old ones they need to sell. Occasionally, deals can be found if you know the right times to shop. You may not care for the rush of big black Friday sales, but these can be another great way to pick up computers and electronics at a great price.
5. Small Appliances
Stores always load up on space heaters and humidifiers when the weather starts to turn cold, and de-humidifiers, fans, and air conditioners when a heat wave strikes. Rather than waiting until you absolutely need one of those items, it’s best to plan ahead and buy them out-of-season for big savings.
6. Yard tools
If you own a yard with a lot of big, leafy trees, don’t wait until September to buy a rake. It will be much cheaper in the winter/spring, when there isn’t as much demand. The same goes for items like snowblowers/snow shovels, lawnmowers, and gardening equipment that are all heavily dependent on the season. Most of the time these out of season models won’t be advertised, but you will find them on the shelves of the store collecting dust with a “reduced price” tag. If you time it right, and plan ahead, you can find plenty of great yard tools and equipment at a great price.
It really doesn’t take a lot of effort to save money by buying out-of-season items. All it takes is some foreword thinking and a willingness to store some items until you really need them. The end result will be some big savings and no need to panic when the seasons change.
