Keeping Your Possessions Safe, Secure And Organized During A Move

movingvanOne of the hardest aspects of moving is not having to make living adjustments for your new life, but managing all of your possessions during the transition. This is especially true if you are not sure where exactly you will be living after the move. By doing some preliminary planning, keeping your possessions safe, secure and organized during the move should be possible.

If at all possible, try to find a place to live before making your move. Consult with a real estate agency in order to set up some tours of properties in the area or attend some open house showings. Do some research online as well. Whether you looking to rent or purchase your new home, there are plenty of potential opportunities listed online. In the case that  you are not computer savvy, there is always the option of looking through brochures.

Should preliminary property searching not be a viable option, rent a storage unit near the area that you are investigating properties in. When you are forced to rent a storage unit, it is a good idea to get rid of unnecessary possessions before making the move to optimize your usage of space in the unit for important items. Have a garage sale well in advance of the planned date for your move. You could even advertise some of your possessions as free at the sale if you don’t want to go through the hassle of disposing them. In situations where you need to complete the move quickly, donating or even trashing burdensome junk are both viable options.
Put all of the important possessions that you will need immediately after the move all in one place that will be easily and immediately accessible upon arrival.. According to For Dummies, “Pack the essentials you’ll need for your first few days in the house inside a large piece of furniture. It might be difficult to know which box has the linens for the beds and towels for the bathrooms, but if you pack them in a chest of drawers, you might actually find them when you need them.” The time directly after a move can be quite hectic if you are unable to find necessary amenities such as clothing, a toothbrush or blankets and a pillow. Planning beforehand can help avoid the need to unpack everything before you feel at home again.

Organize your possessions based on category and then pack them in order of importance. For example, you could pack the highest priority items at the back of the moving truck so that they are the first you will unload upon arrival. It is advisable to utilize this strategy with high value items or perishable food.

Start packing well ahead of your move date so that you aren’t in a rush. Rushing a move can result in consequences such as accidentally breaking fragile items, losing cherished items with sentimental value and even forgetting things that may have been hidden or out of plain sight, such as in an attic or on the top shelf of a closet.
