Keep the Box: Making Money With Collectible Toys
Many people collect toys of all kinds purely for enjoyment and leisure. However, if you want to become a serious collector, you can potentially turn your collections into real money. Yet, how can you make money with collectible toys?
Collect Rare Model Trucks and Cars
While there are plenty of rare and valuable toys you can collect, model trucks and cars are particularly popular and profitable. Collecting model vehicles is especially popular among boys and men since many of them grow up loving cars.
If you want to make money while collecting model vehicles, here are toys to look for:
Dinky toys
Dinky toys are popular with children because they are small and fun to play with. Yet, it is entirely possible to make thousands of pounds off a single dinky if you can find the right one. For example, the 1930 Ensign van is worth a staggering £2,500 while an HG Loose promotional delivery fan recently sold for £4,600.
Matchbox toys
Matchbox toys are also small and fun to play with, although they, too, can earn top dollar for collectors. If you manage to find elite marques that are in mint condition, you can easily make thousands of pounds with a single sale. For example, the 1970 Pontiac sports car can potentially sell for up to £4,000 at auction.
Corgi cars
Although Corgi cars are not as profitable as Dinky toys or Matchbox toys, a good collection can still earn serious money. A Corgi Porsche 509 police car is worth about £100 while other toy vehicles, such as the Corgi James Bond Aston Martin, can make up to £500.
Where to Find Collectible Toys
If you join online communities dedicated to toy collecting, you are sure to network with collectors that may have something you want. Aside from networking with other collectors, you can easily browse online stores or check out websites such as eBay to find great deals. However, if you are using a site like eBay, just remember that you may have to take part in a bidding war if the item is very popular.
How to Ensure That Your Toys Are Valuable
If you want to ensure that you get the most valuable toys, be sure to look for ones that are in mint condition and still in the box. If everything about the toy and box is perfect, you can easily sell the product for top dollar. However, you also have to ensure that you find rare models that people search hard for as well.
If the toy shows a little wear or is without the original box, it is referred to near mint condition. Unfortunately, you will not be able to make as much money with near mint condition toys as mint condition toys. However, if you have something laying around that you can sell for even just a bit of loose change, the money is still better in your pocket.
Collecting model cars and trucks is a hobby that many people take very seriously. By combining your passion with selling techniques, you can easily make extra money to put aside for rainy days.
