North Carolina has some of the lowest car insurance rates in the country, and, as a result, also has one of the lowest uninsured motorist rates. According to reports, North Carolina has an 8 percent uninsured motorist rate, tying with Nebraska for fourth among the 50 states. By contrast, Mississippi has a 26 percent uninsured motorist rate, and according to reports, those cited for lack of insurance claim that their reason for not insuring their vehicle in 41 percent of cases is that they cannot afford the premiums (http://www.statisticbrain.comunisnured-motorist-statistic). Despite the fact that North Carolina already has significantly low rates, there are a few tips for confirming that a customer is getting as low a rate as possible.

Ask About Discounts

Some discounts calculate automatically when an insurance agent determines the cost of a policy. However, a few additional discounts require the agent to have more information about the customer in order to apply them. They include:

Federal or State Government Employee – Governmental discounts on some policies can lower insurance rates as much as eight percent, so be sure to inform the agent if anyone in the household is a state or government employee.

Military discounts – Many policies offer discounts to current and retired members of the military.

Low Mileage – For those who do not drive far to work, are provided a vehicle by their employer, or who simply do not put many miles on their vehicle, low mileage discounts can save significantly on auto insurance.

Passive Restraints – Vehicles equipped with airbags or automatic seatbelts may earn a discount of up to 20 percent.

It is important to remember that not all companies offer these discounts, and may not apply to total coverage but to one portion of the insurance policy, such as personal injury protection.

Compare Rates

Always compare rates between companies when shopping for auto insurance. Comparison shopping does not mean leaving a trusted agent, however. If a lower rate is found through another company, contact the agent to inform them of the lower rate. Allow them to review the policy and confirm that the new company is offering the same coverage at a lower price. In many cases, the current agent will work with the customer to match the other company’s price to retain a loyal patron.
