Equipment And Gear Needed For Your Welding Project Business

| January 23, 2014

weldingFar beyond the equipment and welding torch that is used by a professional welder, there is also a great deal of equipment and protective gear that is needed to ensure their safety. If you are a welder, it’s important that you make sure you’re safe at all times. Here are some of the most important items that you will need when conducting your welding projects:

Welders Will Need Gloves

Although you might find that a lot of welders don’t use gloves when working, they are one of the most important parts of a welder’s wardrobe. These will protect their hands at all times from sparks, electric shock and burns. You can usually find a pair of gloves that are forms fitting, thus allowing you to be more flexible. You can also purchase lined or unlined gloves, and gauntlet gloves are used for protecting the wrists and lower arms as well.

Welders Will Need Hats

A welder will usually wear a hat, or a doo rag, in order to absorb their sweat and avoid sparks that may be associated with their work. You can usually find these in many patterns and colors, or you can go for a basic solid color if you wish. Most of the hats will even protect your ears rather than just your head.

Welders Will Need A Helmet

A welding helmet is the most important piece of gear that a welder needs. It serves many different purposes when it comes to the safety of those wearing it. It works to protect your face and head from the sparks, while also protecting your eyes from the intense heat and flash of the burning flames. In some respects, you are also being protected from the fumes that are associated with welding metals together. When welding, it is required that you have a helmet resistant to heat and electricity, and it needs to be able to shield your eyes from the blinding light.

Welders Will Need Boots

Moving down the list of clothing that a welder will need, the proper boots are very essential. You need to make sure that you have a pair of boots that are fire retardant and the tops come above your ankles, to provide protection from sparks. For even more safety, it is advised to put the pant leg into the boots, with them laced as high as they will go. These are just extra precautions that will keep you safe at all times when working on welding projects.

Welders May Need Respirators

Respirators are not a must have, but if you are working in a closed environment where the ventilation isn’t all that great, you may need to use a respirator. If your company doesn’t provide them already, you can search online for the type that you may need.

General Precautions To Take

It’s always important that you are wearing the proper clothing when you are welding. Make sure that all of your clothes are made from 100% wool or cotton and that the fabric has a tight weave. This will help protect you against any sparks that may come from the project you are working on. Never wear synthetic materials, as they are very easy to catch on fire.
