4 Air Conditioning Installation Factors That Affect Energy Efficiency

| July 24, 2013

ACInstallWhen you are installing a new air conditioning unit it is important that your contractor does it properly to make sure that you get the maximum energy efficiency possible. There are many factors that must be taken into account when installing your new unit. Size of the unit, size of your home, type of unit and many other questions will need to be answered to insure your home is cooled properly. Here are four factors that your HVAC installer needs to remember to get the efficiency your unit should deliver.

Duct Work Installation

When installing your duct work, your contractor should install as much of it in the conditioned space as possible. This means to avoid putting it in the attic if at all possible to do. Placing your duct work in the attic will cause the ducts to be hotter and cause problems with the air coming in your home. It won’t be as cool and will take longer for your home to reach the desired temperature.

Duct Work Seals

The duct work should also be sealed as well as possible. Sealing your attic and other areas that may cause leaks or drafts is very important. The leak and draft in your home can cause a huge loss in cool air. This means you are basically throwing money right out of your front door and windows when your home is not sealed properly. This is an easy step to take to make sure your home is insulated well and your AC unit runs efficiently.

Thermostat Location

Installing your thermostat in the proper location is a huge factor in getting great efficiency. This is because if it is located near a warm or hot spot in your home, your thermostat will cause your AC to run longer than it needs to. It should be away from windows or areas that get warmer than most in your home. This will prevent that loss of cool air and the system from thinking it has to run longer than it should.

Supply and Return Registers

Your contractor should make sure there are enough supply and return registers throughout your home. The supply registers brings the cool air into your home and helps it reach the desired temperature you want it. The return registers take the hot air out of your home and back to the AC unit to be cooled. If there are not enough of these in the home it can cause major problems with your efficiency levels. Your system will have to work harder because it can’t get your home cool enough or get the air back to it as it should.

These are just a few of the factors that go into installing your new energy efficient unit. These are all important and should be considered and covered by your HVAC contractor. Be sure to ask questions to make sure you understand that everything is done to get the most out of your unit.
