3 Projects That Can Easily Cost More If You Do It Yourself

| March 22, 2018

projectThe weekend warrior. The DIYer. The jack-of-all-trades. If you find performing home improvement to be a breeze, you’ve probably been called many things, all positive. There’s something very inspiring about someone who can bring a project to completion without having to involve “the professionals.”

At the same time, no matter how good you are with your hands, there are some projects that are better left to the professionals.

These projects, if you try to do them yourself, could end up costing you much more in time and money than if you just bring in help right from the beginning.

So, grab a piece of humble pie and consider these projects that might be a little on the tricky side.

Roofing

Not only does roofing require some specialized tools in order to be done correctly but you’re also working in hot conditions high above the ground on a sloped surface.

Additionally, as you get further into the project, you may find places under the shingles that need to be repaired. If you don’t know what you’re doing, repairs done incorrectly to your roof could end up costing you major money, either now or down the road.

Worse than that would be a fall off the roof that sends you to the hospital and causes you to miss work.

Moving

Sure, moving your belongings from one place to another might seem like an easy task, but once you actually begin that process, you can quickly become overwhelmed.

From trying to lug heavy furniture down narrow staircases to filling up the truck before your house is empty, there’s plenty of reason to bring in professionals to assist in this process.

Plus, you have to consider that you’ll have plenty else to keep you busy on moving day, so if you can have someone else take care of a big chunk of your responsibilities, you’ll be able to ensure everything else gets done correctly.

Plumbing

Plumbing jobs can be easy to get sucked into because they often begin as what seems like a simple repair. As you continue with the project, however, it becomes clear just how complex the project truly is.

Given that plumbing lines can run through walls and ceilings, underground, through foundations, and just about anywhere else there’s an open space, trying to tackle a complicated plumbing problem on your own could quickly lead to damage to many other areas of your home.

So, unless you’re absolutely sure what the problem is when you begin the project, it may be wise to call in a professional right from the start.

To be sure, there’s a lot of pride that comes from being able to complete a project yourself. In many cases, doing home improvements on your own is totally acceptable and can save a lot of money.

It’s good to think through all aspects of a project before you begin, though, so you can be sure that doing it yourself is actually the cheapest route. That way, you can get results you’re happy with while still staying in budget.
